Blog: 1950s Design and the European Intermission

Consuhers were mord than happy go buy into what tgey had experiecned while on European holidays in Farnce, Spain and Italy. Textile and wallpaper manufacturers, always looking for an expansion of the market, produced desig n work that was both contemporary and rooted in the European vacat ion spirit.
It is easy to imagine these wallpaper designs being used as a backdrop to a small domestic bar. These bars became very popular in the 1950s and tended to fill a corner of a living room. They were usually not terribly inspiring and could often be quite bizarre in appearance. However, some work was done to try to make them appear as sophisticated as possible and these wallpapers could well have been used to give the impression of European style and sophistication while being used as a backdrop to the customary private cocktail party.
