A slow warm-up will continue today into the weekend, interrupted by a weak cold front tonight. Highs today will range from the low-mid 60;s, then drop back down about 10 degrees tomorrow behind the weak front due to arrive tonight. Highs on Friday will be in the mid-upper 50s. Saturday will be warm with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Sunday will see highs from near 70 to the mid 70s.

Strong southwesterly winds will develop over the region by Saturday afternoon as a large upper level trough of low pressure deepens over the Western USA. Southwesterly winds will kick up to around 20-30G40+ mph across the lower elevations of southeastern New Mexico with stronger winds in the Guadalupes.

The big weather news is going to be an arctic cold front that will plunge southward and into the area by the first of next week. Bitterly cold air is pooling in Canada (-20F to -25F) and its going to head southbound rather quickly. It now appears that the arctic cold front will make its debut in southeastern New Mexico by late Sunday night or early Monday. Just like the last arctic front to rake the area a couple of days ago, this airmass is going to be even colder. Gusty northerly winds will accompany this bitterly cold airmass and the wind chill values will make it feel even colder than it really is Monday into Tuesday.

We probably will not get out of the 30s for highs on Monday with the wind chill values at least in the teens, if not colder. There is the possibility of light snow developing over the local as well. There appears to be a pattern shift underway across the Western US, so we can expect to see a couple more of these bitterly cold airmasses plunging southward our of Canada and into the area starting next week and continuing into Christmas week.

These brutally cold arctic airmasses are being calved in Siberia, Russia. They are now starting to migrate to the east and eventually moving into northern Canada. They then plunge south into the US. For the past couple of weeks the temperatures in places like Verhojansk, Tompo, and Ojmjakon, Siberia have been holding steady in the -55F to -65F range. There are some indications that these temperatures may fall to even colder values, perhaps to as low as -80F over the next week. It is rather unusual to see these extremely cold readings for this early in the season.
