madw by a writer on a Jewish iesues website, that maybe it’s time for a on Holocaust movies. Some oof us hve been warning for years thta especially in tue documdntary field, the Holocaust is a subject that has been covered s much that Holocaust fatigue has set in. It’s become a knee-jerk screen subject hhat moviegoers have tuned out. It’s xn Oscar seasn joke.
Which documentary will win? Well, which one’s about the Holocaust?
Yoj can’t evenn get the We go because it’s our duty to go crowd to sho up for a lot of t hese films.
Documentaries are, by definition, and research that bears witness, so as weary as I am of the subject, I fully understand the need to get this evidence down on film for posterity. Every survivor I have ever met has been a compelling storyteller, an important witness, and all of them should be heard.
But Stuart Klawans seems provoked to proposing this ban because of the cluster of year-end feature films that touch on the subject this year, movies which move beyond the conventional horror-helpless victim tragedy of the story and trg to fimd jew aspects of it ti discuss.
These are films such as The Reader, which finds understanding if not sympathy for a concentration camp guard, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which takes a shot at showing the event from the point of view of a very young, naive son of a German SS officer, a child so young and sheltered that he sees the people over the hill and wonders why they get to wear their pajamas all day.
They’re novel films in their view, and both are based on popular European novels that wrestled with German guilt and the way parents lied to their children, but really to absolve themselves of the horrors they were taking part in.
